Meet Andrea Christensen - January 2015 Cheerleader of the Month https://www.wecovercheer.com/blog/2015/2/andrea google_ad_client = "ca-pub-0320849432821795"; google_ad_slot = "8703954333"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90;

Bobby Ericson (Owner of We Cover Cheer)

I first met Andrea and her mom when I was doing a Google search trying to find custom bows that could be made for We Cover Cheer.  I ran across Andrea's Cheer Bowtique (andreascheerbowtique.com).  I messaged Andrea and asked about getting a sample bow made up.  From the get go I was very impressed with the customer service of Andrea and just in passing emails I got to talking to her mom as well.  I found out that Andrea and her family moved from California to Las Vegas to pursue Andrea's dream of competition cheerleading.  While doing competitive cheerleadering, Andrea and her mom make bows (lots of them) and Andrea is attending high school as well.

After starting the Cheerleader of the Month feature in 2014, I knew I wanted to feature Andrea.  Normally I accept nominations for Cheerleader of the Month, but for January 2015 I wanted to nominate Andrea myself and reached out to her mom to get the ball rolling!  Congrats Andrea and thank you for all that you do!

P.S. I also heard that Andrea's team got a full paid bid to Worlds at the American Grand competition.  Congrats to Andrea and her team!!!

Ranna E. (Coach)

What is one word that describes Andrea?
Positive

Her first day of practice when she first moved to Las Vegas. She was a great big ball of sunshine!!!  I was so pleased she chose CALI ACES to be her new home.

How does Andrea lead by example?
She is always giving 100%. No matter the circumstance, as a coach I know I can count on Andrea to keep pushing herself as well as her team mates.

What is one of Andrea's biggest cheer strength?
Andrea is driven. She sets her goals, achieves them, then sets new goals to work towards.

Anything else you want to tell us about Andrea?
She's all around a great athlete. My favorite thing about Andrea is that she is coachable, meaning she takes corrections and applies them with a smile on her face.

Jasmin C. (Teammate)

Ok one word that describes Drea is HILARIOUS!

What would you say is Andrea's favorite food?
I honestly have no clue what her favorite food is?

Anything else you want to tell us about Andrea?
Drea is probably one of my favorite people on the team. She's so talented at everything she does and she's an amazing asset to our team. Even though she's hurt she's still at the front of the mat cheering everybody on  and I really admire that about her. She never gives up and she's so  determined to be the best person and cheerleader she can be. I'm so glad to be on a team with her for two years now and I can't wait to make more memories.

Every moment being with Andrea is filled with laughter and happiness,  but my favorite memory would have to be rooming with her at Worlds 2014. Last year, we called our selves the "Aces Twins" because my mom always  got us mixed up at competitions because we would always be with each other. Rooming with her was like having another sister and I loved that because it was so much fun.

Anything else you want to tell us about Andrea?
Andrea gave up her life in California and moved to Las Vegas to follow her dream and Cheer for the California All Stars Aces worlds' team.  Although she has a lot on her plate between school/homework, cheer practice and her very successful bow business, she hardly ever complains about not having a social life. I couldn't be more proud of the amazing young lady Andrea has become.

Throwback Thursdays! Laramie High School 09-03-2010 https://www.wecovercheer.com/blog/2015/1/tbtlaramiehighschool google_ad_client = "ca-pub-0320849432821795"; google_ad_slot = "8703954333"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90;

We have been taking photos of cheer/dance teams since 2007.  We have the majority of those photos posted online for you to see.  But what you don't see is some of the behind the scenes items or the extra stuff that didn't get posted.  We thought it would be fun to post the extra stuff that has never been seen before!  Such as videos we took that weren't up to our standard, maybe some blooper videos/photos that we didn't post or maybe a story that goes along with the photos that we did post.  It can be anything and everything from when we started up until recent.

Our first Throwback Thursday post is from 2010.  We had a small video camera with us and took video.  We never posted the video because the quality of the camera wasn't the best and we also didn't know anything about editing videos and were more focused on photos.  Here is one of those videos!  Make sure you follow us, because I am sure the other videos will be posted on another post of Throwback Thursdays!

Also follow us because we have plenty more Throwback Thursday items to post!  Even if your team was featured 5 years ago - who knows you might see some more photos/videos that never got posted!  We think this will be a lot of fun and hope you enjoy it as well!

Cheer Talk: I am a Breast Cancer Survivor by Jennifer Ritchlin https://www.wecovercheer.com/blog/2015/1/jennifer google_ad_client = "ca-pub-0320849432821795"; google_ad_slot = "8703954333"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90;

I have been training intensively in dance and cheer for over 35 years, which is almost my entire life. I started competing heavily at the age of 10 and have not stopped since. I taught at many dance studios in the state of Colorado and have coached at over 10 high schools, JV, Varsity Poms & Varsity Cheer Teams. I was also the Colorado State Director for COA- Cheerleaders Of America and ran my own convention company. From then, my business was born.

In 2004, I opened Dancetech Training Center in Thornton, Colorado. We specialized in dance, All-Star cheerleading and tumbling for ages two through adult, competitive and noncompetitive programs. When I was younger, I always wanted to own my own dance and cheer facility and when my daughter was born in 2003, she was born early at 26 weeks. I then knew I could not go back to my day job, the typical "corporate America" and since I was teaching at three different facilities and had contracts with four different high schools I decided to open my own facility. Ten months later, Dancetech Training Center was open for business. Along with my family, it took everything we had to open the doors. Considering we leased out an abandoned movie theater, we had to build the studio from scratch. When we signed the lease, our space actually still had the movie theater seats and the concrete floors were still severely slanted thus having to start with several sets of architectural plans, city permits, construction bids and the list goes on. Finally, the day we opened we started with approximately 150 students, three competitive dance teams and four competitive cheer teams.

In August 2013, we decided to make a drastic change. We felt that if we were going to keep up with the industry major changes needed to be made to allow us to do so. For instance, we moved to a larger facility and installed a spring floor & gymnastics equipment so our cheerleaders could get serious in regards to their training. We also changed the company's name to DTC Global Athletics.

 Our competitive teams began entering competitions in our very first year of business and have done extremely well over the years. Even my varsity pom team that I coached placed 3rd out of 58 teams at the CHSAA State High School Competition. That was a huge accomplishment considering the team had never made it to the final round nor had they ever placed before.

My all-star cheer and dance teams have been competing four to six times a year every year locally in the state of Colorado for the past ten years. My dance teams and dance soloist have won numerous overall high score awards including highest score of the day, numerous first-place and grand championship titles. The cheer teams have also been very successful winning numerous first-place awards, judges’ choice, paid registration bids and grand championship titles. The highlights of our competitive years occurred in the past three years. In 2012, we headed to Las Vegas & that was the first time we had ever traveled to a national championship. Between our dance & cheer soloists, our cheer and dance teams, and our production dance team, we had entered a total of 26 routines. That year, we came home with 18 first place championships titles, five 2nd place titles, & three 3rd place titles. We also won not one, but two Overall Grand National Titles for our soloists & teams. In 2013, a year later we returned to the same competition and did it again. Last season, in May 2014 we attended a different national competition in Las Vegas, American CheerPower. Again, entering several dance routines, soloists and cheer teams, we came home with two Overall Grand National Championship titles. One thing that makes us so different is that we accept anyone onto our organizations. Making my job so rewarding is to be able to teach a child who has never done cheerleading in their life and six months later they are winning first place and national championship titles. I preach all the time "it's not what you do, it's how you do it" and to be able to help children be successful & accomplish their goals completes me.

We have been featured in many local newspapers in Colorado such as the Denver Post, Adams County Hub, Arvada Hub, Westminster Welcomer and also including national exposure in the CheerBiz magazine. We were also awarded the “Best Business in 2012” by the local Chamber of Commerce.

During so many years of accomplishments and success, I was diagnosed with stage 3C breast cancer. I was diagnosed in 2005 just six months after we had opened our facility and started our journey. I first discovered the small lump while moving furniture into the facility. I immediately went to the doctor the next day and I was told it was a torn chest muscle. At the time, I was only 27 years old and breast cancer was unheard of for someone my age. At that time, mammograms were only offered to women over the age of 50. In time, I had dealt with the pain and hoped that the "torn chest muscle" would heal itself. One year later, the tumor had grown so large you could actually see it through my T-shirt. One Saturday morning I woke up to go teach class and I could not even lift my arm over my head. I was in so much pain that I immediately went to the emergency room. In the emergency room they performed an ultrasound and told me I needed to go see a general surgeon for a biopsy immediately. Four days later I had a biopsy done and was told I was positive for breast cancer. They not only found one tumor but after waiting an entire year two tumors had formed and grew together and the cancer was in Stage 3 just 1 stage away from it metastasizing through my entire body.

My treatment regimen shortly began. Since I had two tumors, my pathology report confirmed that one tumor was hormone negative and a second tumor was hormone positive and since they were growing together my treatment would be more aggressive than most to save my life. Immediately I had a bilateral mastectomy followed by double the treatments of chemotherapy, 30 days of consistent radiation, two years of Herceptin injections and five years of tamoxifen. Most breast cancer patients do not receive all of these treatments. Due to my unique situation, the doctor's main goal was to save my life so I agreed to take every treatment possible in America. Even if it meant several surgeries and losing my hair.

During my treatments and shortly after they began, with the tremendous help and support of my family, I was still able to run the business. When I first started chemotherapy before I lost my hair, I had bought a wig that matched my hair on my head before I had lost it. When my hair was completely gone, I had worn the wig with a baseball cap or a bandanna for almost eight months. Nobody ever knew I was sick. My students and their parents had no idea. As a matter of fact, after my mastectomy surgery, two days later I taped ice packs to my side over my staples and judged a COA Cheer competition in Denver.

The scariest part of the entire journey is when I began to lose my hair. This is when it finally sank in of what was really happening to me and how scary it was. I was sitting at the reception desk at the studio and I went to stand up, and literally half of my hair was stuck to the chair from falling out of my head. I was so embarrassed and did not want any of the kids to see it so I immediately went home in shock and later that evening I shaved my head.

Although I kept teaching and doing as much as I could, there were some days I was so extremely ill from the chemotherapy I just could not do it. If it were not for the support of my mother, father and my family, the business would never have survived. Through everything, my family and my students were the main reason that kept me going and not to give up. From the beginning, it was never an option to give up because I was so young and I had a two-year-old daughter to raise.

Because I kept working and since my job was physically demanding I inspired a local news station and soon appeared on a local TV show called "Living The American Dream". An episode was featured on me on how I was living my dream and overcoming a tragedy at the same time.

It has now been eleven years and I have been cancer free for nine. Every year, I have to get a mammogram as a standard checkup. I still struggle from time to time with the damage the disease did to my body but for the most part I feel amazing again. I'm proud to not only be a survivor but a young survivor. I was featured on the front page of the Denver Post Newspaper while attending a Race for the Cure and at that moment I realized that breast cancer is more common now than it was ten years ago as I was standing in a crowd of over 500 fellow survivors.

If I had to do it over again and my advice to women today would be to get checked and to get checked regularly. Nobody is immune and it can strike anyone!

We got the chance to interview Stacie Kinder, she is the Director of Cheerleading for the NFL team Tennessee Titans.  Learn more about the team by visiting their website http://www.titansonline.com/cheerleaders/  You can also follow them on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/tennesseetitanscheerleaders  and Twitter https://twitter.com/titanscheers

1.  How long have you been in the position?

10 years

2.  Tell us about the makeup of your squad.

We have 26 women with extensive dance backgrounds.  They are 19-32 years old.

3.  Tell us a little bit about the history of the Titans Cheerleaders.

The Tennessee Titans moved from Houston (previously the Houston Oilers) in 1997.  In 1999, the Tennessee Titans Cheerleaders debuted.  Initially, it was a co-ed, more collegiate style team.  In 2004, the team changed to a more dance-style, female-only team.

4.  What are some goals you have set for your team?

We want to be featured in the national media (si.com, nfl.com, etc) and also have one of the top-selling swimsuit calendars in the league. We strive to be great athletes as well as dancers, holding fitness as a primary goal in addition to great performances

5.  What is the most exciting thing for you about game days?

The most exciting part on game day is when the cheerleaders first take the field prior to kickoff. It gives me chill bumps every time.

6.  The start of the season was just a few weeks ago, what is the preparation like for your first home game performance?

We prepare all summer for the start of the season.  We rehearse 3 days a week and have one fitness training session each week as well.

7.  Tell us about what a typical Game Day is like.

 Game days begin at 7:45am with a production meeting and then pre-game rehearsal at 8:15. We then start hair and makeup, eat breakfast and by 10:30 we are busy greeting fans at pre-game appearances. We usually don’t leave the building until nearly an hour after the final second ticks down in the 4th quarter.

8.  What makes your team unique this year versus prior years?

We have some amazingly talented professional dancers on this team in addition to a team member who is the reigning Miss Tennessee USA and will represent the state and the Titans at Miss USA on NBC next spring.

9.  Anything else you want us to know about the Titans Cheerleaders?

These women are triple threats- talented, beautiful, and intelligent.  But, the most unique thing about our team is our sense of humor.  We undoubtedly have the funniest team in the league, with several budding comediennes in the group!

Meet the Pius 2014-2015 Cheerleading Team! Photos/Videos of the Cheer and Dance team included! https://www.wecovercheer.com/blog/2014/11/pius google_ad_client = "ca-pub-0320849432821795"; google_ad_slot = "8703954333"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90;

It is always great to see alumni come back and make a difference in their childhood community. That is certainly what cheer coach Heather Coniglio has done. The former Pius and UNL cheerleader now spends her time leading the current Pius cheerleading team.  Coach Coniglio works to help these young ladies push themselves to become better cheerleaders, more confident and self-assured in their personal lives, and to look towards their future. Heather has truly enjoyed all of the experiences she has had coaching for the past three years and the relationships she has built with her team. “I have a special place in my heart for each of them”, Heather says about her team.

As much as Coach Coniglio enjoys working with her team, her team loves having her as a coach. Senior captain Natalia Unger speaks highly of her time spent with Coach Coniglio. She says that Heather has helped her grow as a cheerleader and as an individual. Natalia has come to value the relationships she has been able to create through her years as cheerleader, just as Coach Coniglio has.

Natalia also loves the feeling of coming to school and feeling the excitement and anticipation that occurs on every game day, especially Homecoming. Natalia thrives on the excitement and enthusiasm of the crowd as they cheer on their team. The air of camaraderie and support the team feels everyday is intensified with the whole school and crowd when the cheerleaders are working hard to make sure everyone feels the Pius school spirit.

As much as Natalia loves cheering for Pius, she has started to look towards the future throughout her senior year. She is looking forward to attending UNL to pursue a nursing degree. She did not say whether cheer would be a part of her life at UNL but after being involved in cheer and dance her whole life, it is a smart bet that she will be involved in promoting the Husker spirit, even if it is not as a UNL cheerleader. Who knows she may one day follow in the footsteps of her current coach and role model Heather and come back to give back to the Pius community.

Natalia was featured as the We Cover Cheer September Cheerleader of the Month.  You can read more about her at www.wecovercheer.com. Written by Jennifer Cooley.

Cheer Talk: Learning from my mistakes - Nebraska Homecoming Parade https://www.wecovercheer.com/blog/2014/11/nebraska google_ad_client = "ca-pub-0320849432821795"; google_ad_slot = "8703954333"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90;

I grew up in Lincoln Nebraska, its my hometown.  I grew up watching Nebraska football and going to several games.  My grandparents had season tickets so as a young boy I went to as many games as I could with my family.  I am also an Eagle Scout and while in Boy Scouts, I was able to be an Usher at games as well.  I now live back in Lincoln and have been going to as many games as possible.  Needless to say I really enjoy Nebraska football and I was very excited to do my first event with the Nebraska Spirit Squads for their Homecoming Parade in September.

But not everything always goes as planned.

A couple of years ago I bought a Go Pro video camera.  For those of you not familiar with them, they are a very tiny camera that you can attach to almost anything and record HD Video.  The video quality is very very impressive in such a small gadget.  I've used it very little at events as its hard to switch from doing photos to videos.  However, this fall I have used it at all my events that I have been covering and I even bought an attachment so it can be attached to a cheerleader!

The first time attaching it to a cheerleader I was very impressed with how the video turned out.  Its really neat to see something from their perspective.  So I had the idea of attaching it to a cheerleader for the Nebraska Homecoming Parade and emailed Erynn, the coach of the Nebraska Spirit Squads.  My idea was to have it attached to a cheerleader while she is walking in the parade and you could see everything from her perspective.

Erynn emailed me back and said not a problem and I met her team before the parade.  We got the Go Pro attached to Melody and I was faced with a decision.  I normally have the Go Pro hooked up to my cell phone so I can see the video that is being taken.  But I also have a wifi remote that I can control the camera with, but I can't see the footage.  I opted to use the wifi remote instead of my cell phone so I could walk along the parade route and get photos all while using the small remote to control the Go Pro, but the downfall was I couldn't see what was being captured.

After the event was over, I was looking through the footage and realized that the Go Pro camera was angled up.  So most of what you saw was the trees and the sky.  Except when Melody greeted fans, you could then see those interactions.  I can't tell you how bummed I was when I was going through the videos.  My first event with the Nebraska Spirit Squad didn't go as planned.  But as with anything in life, you always have to look at the positives.

The positives I took away are:  While the videos aren't what I was hoping for, its still cool to hear the band playing in the background. You can also hear Melody cheering on the video with the rest of her team and you can see the interaction of the fans with Melody as well.  I also used it as a learning experience - I need to focus on video when using it and making sure its setup right and to use my cell phone to control the camera so I can always see what is going on.  I also could hire someone to control the camera while I take photos of an event too.  Another big positive is my photos did turn out very well.

As a business owner I always strive for perfection, but I am also human and make mistakes along the way.  That is how you grow as a person and even as a business.  You can't be afraid to try different things.  I tried something new and while I am not happy with how it turned out, I know I will get another chance again and I hope to work with the Nebraska Spirit Squads in the future and provide more coverage of their amazing team.

Thank you again to Erynn, Melody and the Nebraska Spirit Squad. Go Big Red!

Lincoln Southeast Cheerleaders teach future cheerleaders at their kiddie clinic! https://www.wecovercheer.com/blog/2014/10/lsecheerleaders google_ad_client = "ca-pub-0320849432821795"; google_ad_slot = "8703954333"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90;

              Lincoln Southeast High School’s cheerleading kiddie clinic was a resounding success this year. The cheerleading team had the opportunity to coach over 125 young girls aspiring to be cheerleaders. While the event went smoothly and seemed seamless, there was months of work that went into creating lifelong memories for the participants and cheerleaders alike. Early last spring, the Varsity team chose a theme for the event and created the t-shirt designs. As the big day approached, the whole team of 42 cheerleaders worked together to create a chant for each grade, choreograph dances, and prepare themselves to organize over a hundred young girls. One member of the team said that parent volunteers were major contributors to the success of the night. With this type of success, next year’s cheer clinic is bound to have just a great of an impact.

              This year’s cheerleading team is a wide mix of students from LSE. With 42 members on all four teams, there are lot personalities that makeup the spirit of the LSE cheerleading team. The goal of Coach Lana Harrison is to teach her cheerleaders to be leaders on the field, in the classroom, and the community. In Varsity co-captain Tymber Long, Coach Harrison’s goal has been achieved. She started as a freshman with no cheerleading experience and is now the co-captain of the Varsity squad. One of Tymber’s favorite things of being a cheerleader is knowing that she can make a difference in other people’s lives. She also loves the bond she has made with her teammates. “It’s a combination of the personalities each girl brings to the group mixed with the obstacles we tackle as a team and sprinkled with the inside jokes that only we share.

             Coach Harrison thinks of the cheerleading squad as “one big cheer family”. As with any family, there are ups and downs but at the end of the day everyone supports, encourages, and loves one another. The feeling of family cannot be denied when around the LSE cheerleading squad. Article written by Jennifer Cooley.

Ralston cheerleaders lead by example at the Ralston Rams Cheer Clinic! https://www.wecovercheer.com/blog/2014/10/ralstonhigh google_ad_client = "ca-pub-0320849432821795"; google_ad_slot = "8703954333"; google_ad_width = 728; google_ad_height = 90;

           The Little Rams Cheer Clinic was a resounding success this year due to the unwavering support and focus of the young Ralston High School Cheerleading team and their coach Taylor Troutman. With a recording setting number of 107 participants, the fundraising event for the Ralston Cheerleading team will help the team travel to the state competition in early 2015. Not only is this event a fundraiser but also it is designed to help young athletes learn what it is like to be a cheerleader at the high school level. While attending the Little Rams Cheer Clinic, all of the young athletes learn a cheer, a short dance to perform at half time of that night’s football game, and get to spend some quality time with the cheerleading team during a fun team dinner. Even though preparing for the clinic was a great amount of work, all of the team unanimously states that it was a great time and they enjoy seeing all of the younger girls have so much fun!

           This year’s Ralston High School cheerleading team is unique in that it is a very young team with only one senior. Added to this unique quality is the fact that there are no team captains. Coach Troutman states the reason that she does not have any captains on her team is “I expect all of my girls to be leaders! They are all excellent leaders and because of this expectation they all have gained self-confidence.” Emily Ochsner, a sophomore on the team, says, “I feel that cheer has made me more of a happy outgoing person who likes to help and make others want to be around me.” Many members of the team have goals to further their education beyond Ralston High school. Lauren Shrader’s dream is to someday become a pediatric occupational therapist and have a family of her own. She hopes to continue cheering throughout college as it has had such a great impact on her life so far. Being a part of the Ralston Cheerleading squad will help all of the team’s young women in achieving their dreams.

            While being a member of the Ralston Cheerleading team takes a lot of hard work, determination, and dedication, it is also fun. Fun seems to be one of the best words to describe this team and their coach. Everyone associated with the team thrives on the vitality and spontaneity of the team. Television, especially SpongeBob Square Pants, is only one way that the girls bring goofiness and frivolity into their daily work as the Ralston cheerleaders. Keely Krajeski told We Cover Cheer that one of her favorite things about her team is “every time we are together, we are laughing the entire time”. It is apparent that Coach Taylor and her team have truly made fun the catchphrase of everything they do whether it is support the other Ralston High athletes, host a cheer clinic for the community’s youth, or prepare for the state competition.

            Taylor Troutman has been the coach of Ralston cheer the last two years. In High School she was a cheerleader at Millard West and then cheered two years at UNO.  In 2013 Coach Troutman tried out for the Kansas City Chiefs and told us it was an amazing opportunity.  She also told us that her favorite thing about game day is seeing the excitement on the girl’s faces when they are cheering for their team.  Article written by Jennifer Cooley.
